I am southbound, walking northward,
looking back over my shoulder all the way.
It’s a hard trail, and it feels like walking backwards.
I’m pretty sure I won’t be getting there today.

They said, “How you gonna get to California,”
“When Washington is up the road ahead?”
“Don’t you know there’s something better waiting for ya?”
I’m hoping I can find my way there in the end.

I’m on an outbound train going nowhere
I might as well just go and lay down on the tracks
And watch the jet trails, looking skyward
At least someone up there ain’t ever coming back

They said, “how you gonna find you some euphoria,
making misery your only best friend?”
I got no answers for stupid questions
But maybe I can find ‘em in the end.
